Tomb for the Makijanić Family
- this tomb, crafted from white Brač stone, stands out for its artistic strength and profound symbolism. At its centre is a large stone sculpture of a woman, which serves as the main emotional and visual element of the composition. The figure represents grief and loss, and through the posture of the body conveys silent pain and reverence for a life cut short. Carved with remarkable attention to detail, the sculpture depicts a woman with a bowed head, expressing restrained sorrow and dignity. In one hand, she holds a stone plaque with the portrait of the deceased, while in the other she gently carries a flower – a timeless symbol of transience and remembrance. The purity of white Brač stone enhances the emotion and serenity of the composition. Particularly striking is the surface of the sculpture, especially the drapery carved in stone, where the softness of movement and the illusion of real fabric emerge through masterful craftsmanship. This interplay of light and texture gives the figure warmth, depth, and presence. Created in collaboration with academic sculptor Veno Jerković, this sculpture for the tomb reflects a unique balance between artistic sensibility and stonemasonry precision. The harmony between the sculpture and the architectural elements of the tomb evokes calmness and contemplation, while natural light accentuates the texture and volume of the stone. The Makijanić Family Tomb embodies the union of artistic expression and traditional stonemasonry, where every form carries meaning. More than a gravestone, it is an emotional homage – a lasting memory carved in stone.
